In this passage of the book of Genesis, the Lord God said, ‘it is not good that the man should be alone. I will make him a helpmate…the Lord God built the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man…’ (cf Gen 2:18-24). The gospel tells us that people were bringing little children to him, for him to touch them. The disciples turned them away, but when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me, do not stop them, for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. I tell you solemnly, anyone who does not welcome the kingdom of God like a child will never enter it. Then put his arms round them, laid his hands on them and gave them his blessing’ (cf Mk 10:2-16).
Beloved People of God, God brings people together. One of the major reasons for our being brought together, being in a relationship and staying in community is to be a source of help to each other and to remain a blessing to one another. Challenges of life often overwhelm a lonely soul. A noble company, a compassionate community, an enterprising team, all can be a source of help and a blessing that can cushion the effect and lessen the painful experience of any undesirable and unforeseen circumstance that life throws at us. God’s wisdom has designed it like that.
As we pray in the words of the psalmist, ‘may the Lord bless us all the days of our life’, we ought to learn to help others and become a source of blessing to one another. For we all are brothers and sisters in the Lord. Faith has brought us together. Scripture says, ‘…we are of the same stock’ little wonder our Blessed Lord openly calls them brothers… (cf. Heb 2:9-11). The waters of baptism are thicker that consanguinity.
