In his teaching on the last things, Our Lord made crystal clear what had hitherto been only partially understood, that each of us, after our death, would be judged, and that there would be only two possible ultimate outcomes for us: either eternal life in happiness or eternal damnation.
The judgement of Christ is therefore something that we should prepare for here on earth with the utmost care. Unfortunately, it is easy to forget the eternal truths and to carry on as though our lives here on earth will never come to an end. To assist us in a more realistic approach, the Church at this time of year sets before us the relevant parts of Our Lord’s teaching.
Although we are right to have a holy fear of divine judgement: a fear that helps us to resist temptations and live a virtuous life, we must also have great confidence in the infinite mercy of Our Lord. It is especially helpful to turn in our prayers to Our Blessed Lady, the Mother of Mercy, confident in the many promises that have been made for those who trust in her intercession.
