In the book of Psalm today, we read, ‘Blessed the nation whose God is the Lord, the people he has chosen as his heritage’ (cf Ps 33(32):1.12ff).
Beloved people of God, an inheritance has been promised to us by God. He is our Father. He is faithful. He does not disappoint. He remains faithful to his word, to his promise. Yet, all this promise goes with some expectation. It carries with it attendant responsibilities. We must be conscious that those in the line of this promise before us were described in these words, ‘the holy children of good people, offered sacrifices and with one accord agreed to the divine law, that the saints would share alike the same things, both blessings and dangers, and already they were singing the praises of the fathers’ (cf. Wis 18:6-9). We ought to be aware and remain faithful to the divine law. This awareness calls for action in line with the knowledge of our rich heritage as the adopted sons and daughters of God, children of Abraham through faith. When we, like Peter, ask our Blessed Lord, ‘Lord, are you telling this parable for us or for all? His response will remain, ‘…and that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to who they entrusted much, they will demand the more’ (cf. Lk 12:32-48)
May we not become docile to the teachings of the Holy Spirit. May we obey his promptings. May we learn to follow his lead. In that way, the Lord’s work in our hearts will be brought to perfection. We shall thus merit as his adopted sons and daughters, this inheritance that God our Father has promised us.
