Today, God calls Abram saying, ‘Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s
house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless
you and make you your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless,
and him who dishonours you, I will curse, and in you, all the families of the earth shall be
blessed’ (Gn 12:1-4a). As at this moment, this season of Lent, this call invites us to have a
share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God, who saved us and called us to a holy
calling, not because of our works, but because of his own purpose and grace…’ (2 Tm 1:8b-
10).
Beloved People of God, the call of Abram, is also our call. Our response to God’s call holds
the key to his choicest blessings for us and for the many who will be blessed through us.
Abraham is our father in faith. As children of Abraham through faith, like him, we listen in
love and trusting God, totally, in obedience, we rise and move without fear to the place that
God points out to us. There, his blessings await us. He calls us for his purpose and grace. At
the appointed time, we become ‘grace-full’ because his blessings upon us will turn us into
blessings for others. He will fight those who fight us and curse those who dishonour us.
God’s foremost blessing for us is the choice he has made of us. Like, Peter, James and John,
we are being led to a high mountain, there to experience his transfiguration and glory (cf Mt
17:1-9). It calls for a grateful joy. We pray with the psalmist, ‘may your merciful love be upon,
as we hope in you, O Lord. May his eyes be upon us. May he rescue our soul from death and
keep us alive in famine’ (cf. Ps 33(32):4ff)
