SILENCE – PRAYER – REFLECTION – RESOLUTION

The prophet Isaiah presents a disposition that can be very useful and helpful for the Holy Week. This he introduces in the words, ‘The Lord God has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught. The Lord God has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious…’ (cf Is 50:4-7). The words, ‘Morning by morning he awakens my ear to hear…’ point to the need for a silence that listens actively and attentively. Speaking can be done but not until one has listened properly and understood as one who is taught. The Lord God engages the two ears first so that every word that is spoken is meaningful, purposeful and edifying. It needs constancy and consistency. It needs persistence.

Beloved People of God, in the life of every Christian, and especially during the Holy Week, every word ought to sustain and build up and not destroy. Silence is therefore encouraged when words can be frivolous, useless and aimless. A silence that among other things, helps us to enter deeper into prayer, meaningful reflection and positive resolutions ought to be treasured – resolutions that build us up into the very person that God our Creator intends us to be.

As we enter this solemn week – Holy Week, may we open our heart to the treasures of silence, prayer and reflection. May our resolutions therefrom better our life as God’s children that He loves. In the quiet silence of our heart, may we appreciate the sacrifice made by Jesus our Lord and Saviour for our salvation. May we learn how to humbly reciprocate this sacrifice in the love that we bear one another.

I wish you a fruitful Holy Week and a Happy Easter

Fr. Ted
