‘UPPER ROOM’ has rich spiritual meaning. The words, ‘When Judas had gone out from the upper room…’ have such significant impact and implication on his life and salvation. ‘In the Bible, the “upper room”, Cenacle in Latin, refers to a room, traditionally an upper story or attic, that held significant meaning in the lives of Jesus and his disciples… It also served as a meeting place for the apostles after Jesus’ ascension, where they gathered in prayer…The upper room has become a metaphor for a place of personal communion with God, spiritual empowerment, and renewed focus on God’s will…The upper room is where loving God becomes our main priority, hearing from him becomes our main focus, and serving him becomes our main desire. What originally started as a physical space in Biblical accounts has now become a spiritual metaphor that beacons a significant spiritual reality. In today’s world, it is a place of personal communion with God, where the empowerment gained through our encounter with the Holy Spirit will transform all our imperfections and renew us…In the upper room, we gather to encounter Christ. More importantly, it is where Christ encounters us…’ (cf. Shivonne Sant-Solomon, The Power of the Upper Room, Catholic Women in Business, Jun 2, 2022).
Beloved people of God, the Upper room offers us God’s loving protection through the community of his beloved people and or through our private/personal encounter with God who loves us. Staying in or going out from the upper room will also have a mighty implication for our salvation in our journey of faith – pilgrimage.
May we never be exposed to the vulnerability of the barrage of temptations that target God’s children without the support of Community. May our meeting/gathering in the upper room continue to strengthen us all as Jesus encounters us just the way we are. As Shivonne Sant-Solomon has it: Don’t forget this valuable principle: It’s not the place but the presence that makes the upper room.
