VOICES THAT ELICIT joy

Today we read that, ‘…Mary arose and went with haste into the hill country to a town in Judah, and she entered the house of Zachariah and greeted Elizabeth. And when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, the baby leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and she exclaimed with a loud cry, ‘Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! And why is this granted to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For behold, when the sound of your greeting came to my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy…’ (cf. Lk 1:39-45).

Beloved People of God, our voices ought to elicit joy in others. Our presence ought to speak of peace. Our visits should bring happiness. Our company ought to build up and not tear down nor destroy. In our person, through our words and actions, the loving presence of the Word-made-flesh ought to be felt and the salvation that his birth ensures be desired by all who encounter us. This is for all of us, the least no less than the greatest among us.

May the sound of our greetings, like Mary’s, spring from a heart that loves truly and therefore bring joy. May our voices speak of peace, hope, and happiness. May our sacrifices, this season and always, be born of genuine Christian virtue of generosity. May we never give grudgingly of our time, talents or resources.
