This Sunday, the Lord promises us as he did his disciples, ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give another Helper, to be with you for ever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you, and will be in you…I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you…Because I live, you also will live…whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him…’ (cf Jn 14:15-21).
Beloved People of God, the One who has made this promise is faithful. He does not fail. So, what he promises, he fulfils. Indeed, because we love him and keep his commandments, we know and expect that we will receive what he has promised. We ought also to honour him in our hearts as holy.
We are also encouraged to have answers for the hope that is in our hearts. We do it all with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience.
We take his words to heart and truly reflect on the Lord’s resurrection, his promise to not leave us as orphans before his Ascension into heaven, his promise to send us another Helper, the spirit of truth that will live in us. We pray that this promised Helper will assist us to have and keep his commandments. In this way, the Lord will come to us and manifest himself to us. The greatest commandment of the Lord is love. May this love be evident in the way we treat one another, with gentleness and patience.
